How to Choose Clothing Sizes When Shopping Online

Ekobes Editör Ekibi ·

Read size charts with confidence, distinguish body and garment measurements, and compare trousers, tops and outerwear before ordering.

Your usual clothing size can be a useful starting point when shopping online, but it is not enough on its own. Cut, fabric and garment type can make the same label feel different. Instead of relying entirely on photographs, use current measurements and a garment that already fits well. This guide explains which details to look for and how to compare them consistently.

Separate body measurements from garment measurements

First establish whether a size chart describes the body or the garment. The chest width of a shirt laid flat is not the same number as a person's chest circumference. Check whether the table reports a circumference or a one-sided width. If the method is unclear, ask the seller before comparing figures. Measurements taken in different ways cannot be treated as directly interchangeable.

Keep the measuring method consistent

Use a non-stretch tape and avoid pulling it excessively tight. Repeat body measurements using the same method to check your notes. When measuring a favourite garment, fasten its buttons or zip and lay it flat without stretching the fabric. Record the start and end points. Length measured from the shoulder and length measured below the collar, for example, should not be confused.

Read trouser waist, hip and leg measurements together

Consider the cut and length rather than deciding only from the waist measurement. Manufacturer size guides distinguish fields such as waist and inseam. A high-rise or low-rise design may change the position relevant to your comparison. Note the style and cut of your reference trousers so that you can interpret differences in the new product more meaningfully.

Include fabric and fit descriptions in the decision

Slim, relaxed and oversized describe a design intention; they do not replace a measurement chart. Read the fabric composition, stretch information and care instructions. Do not transfer assumptions from a stretchy garment directly to a non-stretch fabric. When choosing outerwear, consider the layers you will wear underneath. A jacket photographed over a thin top may need a different assessment if you intend to use it with a thick jumper.

Ask the seller specific, answerable questions

Instead of asking whether something will fit, ask for a measurement such as the flat underarm-to-underarm width in a particular size. Request shoulder width, overall length or inseam where relevant. Compare the reply with your reference garment using the same method. If you fall between sizes, consider the intended cut and your preferred fit; there is no universal rule to always size up or down.

Frequently asked questions

Will one size fit the same across a single brand?

Do not assume so. Models, cuts and materials can vary. Recheck the chart and description for the particular product.

Are the model's height and clothing size enough?

They can help you understand the presentation but cannot replace your own measurements. Use the product chart and its measurement method as the basis for comparison.
